Outdoors

Planning to climb a mountain or just hike the high street? Inspired by our new exhibition Derek Eland – Being Human at Base Camp?  Our stunning surroundings are waiting to be explored, and our outdoors shop is stocked with clothing and accessories which look as good on the street as they do on the hillside. Brands which combine performance with good design for men and women include Patagonia, Howies, Aigle, Haglöfs, Carhartt and Kühl. Our footwear range includes trail shoes, sandals and wellies as well as Camper for men.

We’re particularly proud of our range of accessories (everything from Victorinox pocket knives to headtorches, flasks and socks) and bags. We stock Fjällräven backpacks alongside Cumbrian brands Chapman and Millican, both renowned for the impeccable design and workmanship of their bags.

Made to the highest standards in Carlisle, Chapman bags represent quality craftsmanship, classic design and a very Cumbrian meeting of form and function. This season we’ve introduced a new range of Chapman bags for women. The Heather shoulder bag is based on a heritage cartridge bag shape and handcrafted from full grain vegetable tanned leather and Border tweed, which is laminated to a cotton backing to make it waterproof and durable.

Food From the Fire by Niklas Ekstedt – £25

At his eponymous restaurant in Stockholm, Michelin-starred chef Niklas Ekstedt cooks food only over Scandinavian wood. In this book you’ll find out how to emulate his mastery of the firepit and wood-burning oven – or simply admire it from a safe distance. Ideas for back-to-basics Scandinavian cooking include grilled hunks of meat and crayfish feasts alongside more achievable recipes for hot chocolate and biscuits. Worth getting the barbecue out for.
