Masterclass – ‘Willow Weaving – creating a small garden obelisk’ with Phil Bradley Willow Weaver
On this masterclass, you will have the chance to work with Phil using willow weaving to create a mini plant support for use in a large plant pot or container. We will be using some of Phil’s home-grown willow and you will learn several basketry techniques. Phil Bradley has been a full-time basketmaker and willow grower for over 20 years – he is based in Deanscales near Cockermouth.
I have a passion for the handmade and homegrown, making everyday objects that are a joy to use. My work is traditional but continues to evolve. I like to make robust, functional baskets that are tactile and hopefully bring great pleasure to those who choose to own them. I produce a range of baskets and site-specific sculptural work using willow weaving. Most of my willow weaving projects are made to commission, so please contact me.If you have a particular project in mind. If you can think it up I can probably make it. I have been making baskets since 1992 following training in France, Poland and the UK.
I live and work in Deanscales near Cockermouth in West Cumbria and grow 38 varieties of willow on several small plots close to home. My willow is harvested and graded by hand and air dried before use. It is grown without the use of pesticide, herbicide or fungicide. My finished baskets are environmentally clean, sustainably produced to the highest standards of integrity. The wood for my furniture and spoons is carefully sourced, usually from storm damaged trees, coppice woodlands and conservation management projects. Phil Bradley
