Masterclass: ‘Cooking with herbs’ with Helen Shipton-Smith from Helen’s Herbs
Helen provides cooking workshops and talks across Cumbria for community groups and schools. They aimed to inspire people to start cooking with herbs and fresh produce in their cooking. Helen is a qualified and experienced teacher and has a passion for cooking and loves to use what grows locally and is in season. Helen grows a variety of culinary herbs and retails them across the UK via her website and at Brampton and Egremont Farmers Markets throughout the year.
You will also find her stand at food festivals and shows throughout the county. Participants will make two items of food to be taken away with them at the end of the session.
My family and I grow a variety of culinary, aromatic and wildlife friendly herb plants in pots. Starting off in our polytunnels and then hardening off in the Cumbrian weather. We live on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, just a few miles from the sea – in beautiful West Cumbria, between St. Bees and Ennerdale. I use my experience as a teacher to go out into community groups and events to teach about using herbs and cooking with herbs, fruit and veg. We have grown herbs for over ten years and love the difference the flavour of fresh herbs can make a dish. I also love to cook and preserve herbal flavours in jams, butter, chutneys, soups and sauces. Helen Shipton-Smith
