shows

Overview

We know that many of our visitors have an interest in antiques, interiors, vintage fashion, knitting and stitching and even fly fishing, and it’s with this in mind that we welcome specialist shows and fairs to Rheged throughout the year.

Visitors have the opportunity to meet local producers, discover emerging designers and pick up something unique to take home – as well as to stop in one of our shops or cafés for a treat.

family theatre

Overview

Lively and skilfully performed, the best children’s theatre can be nothing short of captivating. We work with some of the UK’s best-loved and most creative family theatre companies, who bring accessible, interactive shows to Rheged. We choose theatre which takes classic children’s tales and brilliant new adventures in funny, engaging directions.

talks and workshops

Overview

Our programme of talks and workshops has strong connections to the cultural life of the centre, the area we love, and the craftspeople we admire. You might meet authors, adventurers or photographers, discover more about an exhibition, or join the discussion about contemporary rural life.  Our workshops offer the chance to explore traditional skills, guided by local people who have a gift for sharing their talent.

live streaming

Overview

Opera, theatre and ballet is streamed live to our big screen from the most prestigious arts venues at home and abroad. This makes it possible to watch productions from the English National Opera, Royal Opera House, National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Bolshoi Ballet and The Royal Ballet here in Cumbria, at the same time they are being performed. As well as brilliant performance, we also show art as part of the Exhibition on Screen and Discover Arts programmes. Tickets range from £10 – £15 unless specified.

ENCORE! ENCORE! If you aren’t able to attend a live screening, we often screen specially recorded daytime encores a few days after the live event.

Occasionally, we also show RECORDED BROADCASTS which are slightly older productions that we’ve been given another chance to screen. We specify when these were filmed.

penrith cinema

Overview

Our 3D cinema brings modern technology to an atmospheric auditorium. Our vast screen was designed to show large format films, and we love exploring its possibilities. Our daily programme includes films about nature, outdoor adventure and wild places, classic children’s movies, and explorations of inspiring subjects with links to where we are. On Saturdays between September and April, we hold a popular children’s film club. Film tickets range from £2 – £19 depending on the film.

exhibitions

Overview

A changing programme of exhibitions means there’s lots for all our visitors to discover in our modern Gallery space. We choose culturally stimulating subjects which connect with the values of our Cumbrian home. Each exhibition is carefully curated with a leading cultural organisation or a creative community around us. The work of Cumbria’s world-class artists and craftspeople, often seen here for the first time, resonates with us and our visitors. In the summer, families love our activity-packed child friendly exhibition, which explodes with colour.
