There’s nowhere quite like Rheged, where the arts meet good food, family and fun under a green grass roof. It’s where we share every aspect of what we love about our place, with brilliant food, art, cinema and shopping from both here and further afield. Grown-ups love our live streamed opera and ballet, spa and shops, but families are among our most important visitors. Play is part of the fabric of Rheged, from the outdoor play area to a cinema made for 3D movies.
THE WESTMORLAND FAMILY
Our family of businesses, led by Sarah Dunning, are all firmly connected to their place. It’s a tradition which started the day that farmers Barbara and John Dunning opened Tebay Services, and has continued as we’ve grown and opened the Tebay Services Hotel, Rheged and Gloucester Services. Sarah loves good food and ensures that it’s at the heart of everything we do, along with strong provenance, good design and impeccable craftsmanship.
Tebay was the first (and until we opened Gloucester, the only) family-owned motorway service station on the UK road network. It all started when the M6 cut through the family farm, and we’ve never looked back. Not long after opening the services, we added farmshops which offer gorgeous food and drink from around 70 local suppliers, not to mention beef and lamb from our own farm. You’ll find the same quality and craftsmanship in our Kitchens.
TEBAY SERVICES HOTEL
Just minutes from the services, between Penrith and Kendal, our hotel opened in 1976 and has been welcoming weary travellers ever since. With open log fires, mountain views and relaxed, cosy rooms and suites, it’s a real Lake District retreat – and dogs are welcome, too. As you might expect, our own lamb and beef forms part of a restaurant menu which celebrates the best of Cumbrian food and drink.
On the M5 north and southbound, Gloucester Services are built on a sense of place in exactly the same way as Tebay – it’s just that the place is different. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with a local charity to develop Gloucester Services as a place that does its community good. It also, of course, does visitors good, whether that’s with a haul of farmshop goodies, a run around the indoor play area, or lunch in the vaulted Kitchen.
CAIRN LODGE SERVICES
35 miles south of Glasgow, just off the A74(M), Cairn Lodge is the newest addition to the Westmorland family of businesses. We’ve learned a lot about looking after motorists and their families over the years, and at Cairn Lodge we’re concentrating on the essentials; good, homemade food in the café, and local produce (along with practical bits and bobs, toys and tableware) in the shop. Our filling station is open 24 hours and sells food to go and Fairtrade coffee.
