Roy Fleming Retrospective Exhibition
1st June – 31st October 2010
"Real Cumbria, underneath the glossy picture postcard image of this uniquely beautiful corner of the world… is a harsh, rugged, wild landscape that is my source of inspiration…” Roy Fleming
A selection of Roy Flemings work is on display at Rheged this summer. This free exhibition will be open 10am to 5.30pm daily in the Exhibition Gallery on the fourth floor of the centre. Pictures are available for purchase prices starting at £88.
Roy likes to think of himself as a solo explorer rather than a "photographer" and is known for his dramatic local landscapes, a landscape that is rich in diversity that changes everyday with the light and the seasons. This is what Roy calls Soul Photography.
Using medium format Roy favours traditional wet darkroom developing methods over digital photography as he believes it is only natural in the creation of a landscape print. The print itself is created by the ‘drawing of light’ as the image is projected and worked onto the photographic paper. This not only gives control over the image but gives a feeling to the printing similar to that felt at the time of the initial exposure, as the natural light drew the landscape.
Each Silver Gelatin print can have up to fifteen separate processes. This makes no two prints identical and they are as unique as the landscape itself. Techniques include:- split grade printing, dodging, burning, bleaching and multiple toning.
